Don’t Stop Feeding Now!

Springtime is a most important time to feed your backyard birds.  There are few other food choices, since winter supplies in the wild are running out.  Feeding this time of year is not harmful and does not interfere with nature.  By feeding during the spring & summer months you have the opportunity to watch birds’ most interesting activities – mating, nesting and raising their young.    Spring and summer feeding also is an environmentally safe way to control insects in the garden.  Wrens, phoebes and flickers will consume caterpillars, ants and mosquitoes, reducing the need to use insecticides.

 Early spring is also the time in many parts of the country when we begin to see migrating hummingbirds.  While it may be a little early for your regulars, you may want to get your feeders cleaned and ready to put out for those hungry hummers passing through and in need of nourishment to help them continue their long journey north.
